Life is hard for most families in Colonia Solidaridad, and the pressure is great on students to stop attending school and earn money. Not having a family member who can help with homework means many of our students have to work very hard and attend tutoring to keep up. A scholarship from AHH relieves a family’s financial burden and makes it so much easier for their child to stay in school and get a leg up on a more financially stable future.
Austin Helps Honduras provides all the support that a student needs to attend public school after state support drops dramatically following sixth grade. A one-year AHH scholarship pays for each student’s fees, books, school supplies, school uniform, two pairs of shoes, a backpack, lunch money, and after-school and weekend tutoring. Middle school is within walking distance of colonias Solidaridad and Los Angeles. A high school scholarship includes fare for public bus transportation to and from the farther-afield school.
